Poor Mellie! On the Oct. 2 installment of Scandal, both the Gladiators and the White House are preparing for President Grant’s State of the Union address. While the First Lady continues to unravel following the death of son Jerry, Olivia and Abby butt heads over the former’s re-involvement in the Grant administration. Us Weekly breaks down the biggest OMG moments from “The State of the Union” episode.
1. Mellie Grant Can’t Get Enough Fried Chicken
Mellie is still tragically, albeit slightly humorously, grieving the loss of her son Jerry. Her new wardrobe of sweatpants, robes, and Uggs is on full display when a paparazzo captures her noshing potato chips at Jerry’s grave. The photo quickly goes viral in the press, earning Mellie the unfortunate title of Madam First Crazy.
In an attempt to do damage control, Fitz enlists Cyrus to convince her to clean up nice for the State of the Union address. Unfortunately, Cyrus fails, as Mellie “won’t stop eating fried chicken long enough to put on a cocktail dress,” she says. It’s Abby who’s finally able to talk Mellie into attending, with a speech taken straight from Olivia’s playbook.
2. OPA is Back at It!
Olivia Pope & Associates is together again, minus a few gladiators (RIP Harrison). This time, the gang is helping the White House by ensuring the presence of James and Lisa Elliot at the State of the Union. The duo – James a veteran and POW, and Lisa a schoolteacher paralyzed during a school shooting – are crucial proponents of Fitz’s new gun control platform.
Unfortunately, America’s favorite couple is not all what they seem – they hate each other! Olivia tasks OPA’s own dysfunctional couple – Huck and Quinn – with keeping the Elliots in line before the big night. As Quinn and Huck hash out their own problems, Lisa stabs her husband with a corkscrew – just as Olivia arrives to check in on them.
Olivia, of course, is able to sort out the debacle – promising the Elliots to handle and smooth over their divorce if they play nice for just one night.
3. Jake and Olivia’s Booty Calls
Captain Jake Ballard is all about the booty call! In an effort to distance himself (or fake it), Jake coolly tells Olivia he rented a hotel room near her apartment for “booty calls.” Though Olivia is frustrated and obstinate at first, by the end of the episode, she shows up to his room wearing high-heeled boots and (gasp) nothing else!
4. Cyrus Finds Romance With an (Spoiler Alert!) Escort
Conniving Cyrus can’t seem to catch a break – we almost feel bad for him. Still grieving the loss of his husband James, he is drowning his sorrows at a local bar when a handsome man approaches him. Cyrus first rebuffs the advances, but later returns to the bar and seeks out the suitor.
Cut to the duo making out in a hotel room. Cyrus is nervous – he’s “never done this before” – but his sexy companion has. As it turns out, Cyrus is getting down with a sex worker! Only after their tryst is it revealed that Michael (the sex worker) is working for Portia de Rossi’s sketchy Republican operative Elizabeth.
5. Fitz and Olivia – Together Again?
The tension was palpable as Olivia and Fitz are finally alone together for the first time since she rode off into the sunset. Fitz asks for the room to go over his State of the Union address with Olivia, telling her she “owes” him. As usual, it’s evident that they are both fighting their attraction, keeping each other at arm’s length. But the longing stares are too much to ignore!
