Survey says … my bad! Steve Harvey announced the wrong Miss Universe winner during the live broadcast on Sunday, December 20 — and the Internet is still cringing over it.
The Family Feud host, 58, named runner-up Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez the winner, instead of the actual victor, Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach. It was only after Gutierrez wore the crown and waved to the crowd that Harvey realized his mistake.
“I will take responsibility for this,” Harvey said on stage. “It was my mistake.”
The actor-comedian also apologized via Facebook after the show. “Hey Everyone, I made a terrible mistake tonight in announcing the wrong winner and runner-up for the Miss Universe pageant,” he wrote. “I know how much pride many countries, fans and most importantly, the contestants take in preparing for this night. I hope that you can forgive me.”
He continued: “All contestants were amazing but I want to specifically apologize to Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines again and wholeheartedly. You both represented well for your countries, families and yourselves.”
Despite Harvey’s heartfelt post, the damage was already done. Several memes have since gone viral following the incident.
