Slip on your Ugg boots and get used to hearing both elementary kids and fully grown adults whine because Teen Mom OG has officially started! The latest installment of MTV’s family-focused reality series premiered on Monday, March 23, chronicling the lives of Maci Bookout, Catelynn Lowell, and Amber Portwood (and eventually Farrah Abraham).
But this time, there’s a twist! Instead of continuing with the illusion that these moms, baby daddies, and their kids live their lives as though the cameras are not following them around, Teen Mom OG brings the MTV crews and producers front and center.
The major difference is that a lot of the young kids’ reactions to the new faces invading their space are better explained — for example, when Bookout’s son Bentley throws a temper tantrum, the Tennessee native acknowledges: “He’s definitely acting out because it’s the first day of filming.”
It also allows the stars to always have a sounding board in the form of a producer, as opposed to an awkward, forced conversation with a friend or family member. It’s important to note that Farrah Abraham was not prominently featured in the show’s premiere, but will rejoin the cast later in the season (much to everyone’s dismay).
So almost six years after these ladies first graced our small screens on 16 and Pregnant, what do they have to offer? It turns out quite a bit.
This Michigan native and her longtime love and current fiancé Tyler Baltierra kick off the season with a pregnancy test. (Really, is there a better way?)
“Whelp, you’re going to be a dad,” Catelynn exclaims, revealing, “I’ve always wanted to be a mom.”
“I can’t wait to hold it!” Tyler says, wiping away tears.
The duo chose to place their daughter Carly for adoption in 2009, and the aftermath of their difficult decision was documented on the first few seasons of Teen Mom.
But their family isn’t quite as enthused as they are about Catelynn’s second pregnancy. It doesn’t take long for the pressures of a wedding to start coming from all sides.
“Marriage does not make good kids, good people raise good kids,” Tyler tells his mom. The couple called off their July 2013 wedding after the baby daddy got cold feet on VH1’s Couple’s Therapy, but they are in the midst of planning a new one.
More upsetting than their loved ones’ reactions is car-lover Tyler’s discovery that he might have to, gasp, buy a minivan. He now has a plan to go to school while Lowell watches the little one for a few years before attending school herself.
One person not impressed by the pair’s plans: OG villain Farrah Abraham. At the dramatic reunion on Couple’s Therapy (which they had filmed together despite being on separate seasons), she blasts the couple for not getting married, but doesn’t have much to say when her adult film is brought up.
“She’s a whack job, dude,” Catelynn says of Farrah to a pal. “I think she probably wants to play it off like she’s not mad [for not being on Teen Mom OG], but that bitch is mad.”
Careful, Cate. Something (a.k.a our own exclusive story) tells Us we’re going to be seeing more of Farrah very soon.
Out from behind bars and back in those intense fake eyelashes, Amber Portwood has returned, this time with her own house and a sober reality.
“I think the one thing that people don’t understand unless you’ve been an addict is that you’re never cured,” she tells her cousin. Amber served 17 months in jail as an alternative to rehab after being arrested on drug-related charges. Her longtime boyfriend Gary Shirley took care of their daughter Leah in her absence.
But testing her sobriety, as always, is Amber’s passionate and tumultuous relationship with Gary, who is leading her on more than ever, despite living with his new girlfriend.
It doesn’t help that Amber’s mom Tonya is ready to fight in the middle of a nail salon, throwing up her newly manicured hands in anger.
“Mom, quit talking like that,” Amber says. “You don’t say somebody’s evil. He is the father of my child, and he’s taken care of my child in the past when I was put away.”
Despite these very valid points, Tonya removes her feet from the pedicure tub and leaves the room shouting (and missing her foot rub). The incident has a very negative affect on Amber, who is also missing Gary.
“I thought about getting high after everything [at the salon] so much more,” Amber tells her cousin. “I was feeling like, ‘Oh my god, I could handle this if I was clocked out.’ I need to see my daughter because I’m not feeling well.”
Stay strong, girl!
Career-wise and in the romance department, Maci is straight up killin’ it. She’s in her final year of college working toward her mass communications degree, and her longtime boyfriend Taylor McKinney has moved into her Tennessee home.
Unfortunately, when it comes to her ex and Bentley’s father Ryan Edwards, things are more frustrating than ever. The tattooed biker is clearly not interested in being a full-time (or, really, even part-time) dad. Instead, he is more content spending his days making day trips with his aviator sunglass-wearing girlfriend Shelby and bossing a fussy Bentley around.
When she can’t get Ryan to talk with her in person about the Bentley situation, Maci considers sending him an email.
“If this doesn’t work, I’m done!” she declares.
Yeah, we’ve heard that one before, M-Dawg.
The Teen Mom-turned-porn princess was noticeably absent from the show’s premiere. But the big reveal that she’s returning isn’t far away. In the meantime, let’s all say a prayer for little Sophia (and our eyes).
