How Marvel-ous!
Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey, Jr. no doubt have some celebrating to do: Their film The Avengers debuted to the tune of $200.3 million this weekend, overtaking Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2's record to become the biggest opening film of all time.
Earning $18.7 million in midnight screenings alone Friday, The Avengers raked in far more than its Marvel movie predecessors: The Avengers: Iron Man ($99 million), Iron Man 2 ($198 million), Thor ($66 million) and Captain America ($65 million).
"I'm running low on double takes," Dave Hollis, Disney's executive vice president for distribution, told The New York Times on Sunday. "As the numbers came in, we kept thinking, 'Can these numbers possibly be right?'"
Sony's Think Like a Man followed The Avengers for a second place finish this weekend, earning $8 million in its third weekend in theaters.
Following the Gabrielle Union/Taraji P. Henson flick was The Hunger Games, which took in $5.7 million to settle in third place.
Rounding out this weekend's top five flicks were Zac Efron's romantic drama The Lucky One ($5.5 million) and kiddie flick The Pirates! Band of Misfits, which earned $5.1 million.
