Everything We Know About Disney+’s ‘The Santa Clauses’ Series Starring Tim Allen

Holly and jolly! Tim Allen’s time as Santa Claus has been extended thanks to the upcoming Disney+ series, The Santa Clauses. The Toy Story star made his debut as businessman Scott Calvin in 1994’s The Santa Clause. In the holiday film, Scott magically becomes Santa Claus after he slips on the red suit on Christmas Eve … after the old Kris Kringle slips from his rooftop. Scott must then figure out how to be Father Christmas while trying to navigate his role as a single dad to son Charlie (Eric Lloyd). The task proves to be harder than he thought after Charlie’s mom, Laura (Wendy Crewson), and his stepdad, Neil (Judge Reinhold), start to think their son’s obsession with Scott being Santa is unhealthy. The adorable Charlie, however, comes to his father’s rescue on more than one occasion, and Scott finally embraces his destiny as Santa. In the holiday classic, Santa is challenged to find a wife a.k.a. a Mrs. Claus before Christmas Eve or find himself a new job. Meanwhile, Scott’s son, Charlie, has become a troublemaker at school, which only makes matter worse. In 2006, Allen put on his big red coat for the third installment of magical films, The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. This time around, Scott has to fight Jack Frost (Martin Short) to keep the North Pole from becoming a tourist attraction — and stealing his title of Santa. The franchise also starred David Krumholtz as head elf Bernard, Spencer Breslin as No. 2 elf in charge Curtis and a slew of other mystical creatures, including Aisha Tyler as Mother Nature and Art LaFleur as the Tooth Fairy. While some fans thought they’d seen the last of the Colorado native as both Scott and Santa, they were wrong. In January 2022, Disney+ revealed that Allen would reprise his iconic dual role in a limited series by the same name. “So here we go again ... Santa Claus Is Back

Disney+ announced in January 2022 that Allen would be putting back on his red suit as Scott Calvin a.k.a Santa Claus for the show.

What’s It About?

“Scott Calvin is on the brink of his 65th birthday and realizing that he can’t be Santa forever,” the log line reads. “He’s starting to lose a step in his Santa duties, and more importantly, he’s got a family who could benefit from a life in the normal world, especially his two kids who have grown up at the Pole.”

Amid all of life’s pressures, Scott will set out to find a “suitable replacement Santa” while preparing his loved ones for a “new adventure in a life south of the pole.”

Who Is the Showrunner?

Jack Burditt was confirmed in January 2022 as the showrunner and fellow executive producer alongside Allen, Kevin Hench, Richard Baker and Rick Messina. The team previously worked together on the Home Improvement alum’s comedy Last Man Standing.

Mrs. Claus Is Returning

Elizabeth Mitchell will reprise her role as Santa’s wife, Carol a.k.a Mrs. Claus, in the limited series, Deadline reported in January 2022. Mitchell first appeared in The Santa Clause 2 in 2002. She returned for 2006’s The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause.

Bernard Is Back

David Krumholtz will reprise his role as Bernard the Elf, Deadline reported in July 2022. The curmudgeonly head elf was in the original 1994 film and the 2002 sequel.

Who Will Take Santa's Place?

Disney released a teaser for The Santa Clauses in September 2022, which gave fans their first look at the people who are looking to step into Santa's red suit. First up is Peyton Manning, who wants to interview for the job mostly to "rub this in [Tom] Brady's face."

Tim Allen’s Daughter Joins the Cast

Allen revealed in September 2022 how his daughter Elizabeth Allen-Dick became part of the Disney+ series, playing his onscreen daughter, Sandra. "She got in there because I really wanted her in the background," he told E! News. "And they said, 'Well she'll have to read.' I go, ‘Well, she can read whatever she wants.’ And she read it and even I went, ‘Wow.’"

The Wild Hogs actor proceeded to gush over his child and coworker, saying, "You know, it's been such an organic experience and overzealously it's great to work with, there's no question about it. It was life-changing for me."

Santa's Kids Don't Want to Leave Home

It turns out that Santa's North Pole-born kids aren't thrilled about the idea of leaving the nest. Sandra, played by Allen's 13-year-old daughter, is particularly upset by the move — which only helped her dad's performance.

"I don't want to give too much away, but she doesn't want to go," Allen told Entertainment Weekly in September 2022. "So I tell her, 'Being afraid is OK as long as we can be afraid together.' Even saying the line, I get a little choked up. I looked right at her. One of my photographer buddies was shooting and said it was tear-jerking to watch. I said, 'Well, I'm looking at my kid.' And she literally showed what I learned from Pat Richardson on Home Improvement: Real actors can really emote real emotions. She did it to me there, and I reacted to it, and it was an amazing moment. I'll never forget it."
