Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan are making the most of their three-day trip to Morocco! On Monday, February 25, the royal couple visited the Villa des Ambassadedurs hotel in Rabat and sampled plenty of traditional Moroccan eats.
The food, which was served by children from under-privileged backgrounds, was prepared using recipes from chef Moha Fedal – host of Morocco’s version of Masterchef – and it was made as part of a larger cooking demonstration for Harry, 34, and Meghan, 37.
According to several tweets from royal reporter Chris Ship, the Suits alum sampled a Moroccan dish called pastilla, which is a sweet and savory meat pie that is typically cooked with pigeon. “That’s a big one to try,” the expectant mom said with a laugh as Fedal offered her one of the “beautiful” meat pies.
After breaking a piece off the outer crust, Meghan asked: “This is pigeon, yes?” Chef Fedal confirmed, and the duchess took a bite, calling the food “very good,” before handing a piece off to her husband.
During the visit, Meghan also gave Fedal a copy of Together, a cookbook that features recipes from a group of women whose community was affected by the Grenfell Tower. The royal wrote the forward for the work, and celebrated its release with an event at Kensington Palace in September. Meghan even took the time to write a sweet, personalized message inside Fedal’s copy of the book. In exchange, the cook handed the duchess a copy of his own cookbook, Le Vrai Goût du Maroc.
The parents-to-be’s brief visit to the north African country is at the request of Her Majesty’s Government. “It will build on the close relationship between the U.K. and Morocco,” Kensington Palace told Us Weekly in a statement earlier this month. “The Duke and Duchess are looking forward to the visit, which will highlight the vital roles that girls’ education and youth empowerment are playing in, and shaping, modern Morocco.”
The couple, who married in May 2018, previously met teachers and students living in Morocco’s Atlas mountains, and attended a reception at the British ambassador’s residence.
