Molly Rucker, the younger sister of late sports reporter Wes Rucker, shared a poignant experience she had the day after his sudden death.
“Thursday night, after he passed, I asked him for a very specific sign — something only I would recognize — to let me know he was okay. Within 24 hours, I got that sign,” Molly posted via X on Saturday, February 21. “He is okay. Losing him feels impossible because loving him was effortless. And even in the heartbreak, I know this: I got the greatest big brother. Not just by chance — but by choice. And that is a gift I will carry for the rest of my life.”
Wes, known for his tireless work covering University of Tennessee athletics, died in a car crash in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Thursday, February 19. He was 43 years old.
He and his wife, Lauren, shared a son named Hank. Lauren was also expecting the couple’s second baby, a daughter, at the time of Wes’ death.
In her social media post, Molly reflected on the “wildly complex” relationships that siblings often have.
“What makes this especially hard is that with Wes, it didn’t feel involuntary at all,” Molly wrote. “I would choose him. I would choose Wes to be my brother and my friend in a million lifetimes.”
She continued, “I never had to wonder how he felt about me. He told me — constantly. His words were his superpower. He never missed a chance to say how proud he was of me — proud of my accomplishments, proud of the woman I am. He said it in person, in texts, and oftentimes in unsolicited social media shoutouts that somehow meant even more because they were unprompted and so genuinely him.”
Molly said Wes’ death was particularly difficult because “we had just stepped into what felt like the best years of our lives.”
“He was an incredibly proud husband and dad,” she wrote. “Those roles fit him so naturally. And he was excited to be an uncle — already planning, already loving, already imagining the memories we’d make together. It wasn’t supposed to end yet. Not like this. I imagined we had at least another 30 years together.”
Molly arranged a GoFundMe page for Lauren, Hank and the couple’s unborn baby, which has raised over $718,000 at the time of publication.
“In a tragic instant, our family has faced an unimaginable loss,” the fundraising page said. “As the family navigates this devastating loss, we are hearing from those in a social community that he loved so dearly a desire to support. Coming together to ensure that Lauren and his children are supported, cared for, and surrounded by stability in the years to come.”
The page added, “If you feel led to give, any amount will make a difference. Thank you for your compassion, generosity, and love during this incredibly difficult time.”
Among the top donations were ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit and Scott Van Pelt, who each pledged $5,000 to the Rucker family.
