The lady is a vamp — and you’re going to want to be one, too!
Deep, dark lips have been popping up on red carpets all over the place these past two weeks. Nina Dobrev and Molly Sims modeled wine-hued lips at the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards, Lily Collins rocked an oxblood kisser at a CFDA event, Ashley Benson worked a plum pout to promote PLL at PaleyFest, and Carey Mulligan lacquered a deep raspberry into her smile at the Beverly Hills premiere of Suffragette.
The one thing they all had in common? Each lady looked dangerously romantic, making the trend our beauty crush of the moment!
“This is a great trend — it’s edgy in comparison to what we normally see on celebs,” Jessica Scantlin, Head Makeup Artist for Blushington Makeup and Beauty Lounge, told Us Weekly. “It has a sexy, mysterious vibe that proves to be classic and trendy at the same time, which I think a lot of women love.”
Of course, these ladies are expected to go glam on the red carpet. So how do you make the bold shades work IRL? “You should tone down the rest of your makeup and focus on the lips,” Scantlin suggested.
But for your next gala event — a wedding, a Halloween party, or even a special date with your longtime love — she added, “I would not do it for a first date! But for your ‘red carpet moment,’ whatever that may be, pair the vampy lip with a dark and dramatic eye. I love a plum shadow or a chocolate brown, some faux lashes and winged liner with wine-colored lips.”
Now for the most important question: Which vampy shade is the right one for you? “If you are on the fair side, go for a deep mauve,” Scantlin told Us. One to try: the Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in “After Dark” ($22, Sephora.com). If you have a darker skin tone, Scantlin says, “You can go more purple — a deep plum wine.” If that’s your color, swipe on the Laura Geller Iconic Baked Sculpting Lipstick in “Broadway Plum” ($21, Ulta.com).
