The Mindy Project‘s costume designer Salvador Perez has spent more than three seasons crafting leading lady Mindy Kaling‘s amazingly colorful wardrobe, including her drool-worthy collection of statement coats. And now, for the first time ever, Perez is releasing his own line of threads under his name — a capsule of six coats inspired by Mindy Lahiri.
The limited-edition collection will be exclusively available on Gilt.com starting Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 12 p.m. ET. Even better? Each design will be worn by Mindy (played by Mindy Kaling) in an episode of the Hulu series.
“One of the first things I started making for Mindy on The Mindy Project were the fun, colorful coats I couldn’t find on the market,” Perez tells Us Weekly. “The fans have been requesting them for years, so I wanted to make them available to purchase.”
And the boss was pretty accommodating. “Gilt really let me design and manufacture the coats the way I make them for the show, with the same lavish fabrics and trim details. I would love to continue making the looks available to fans,” the designer shares.
For those Mindy lovers who might be a touch worried about rocking the fictional OBGYN’s famously bold style, Perez recommends rethinking prints as neutrals. “I paired the aqua and gold coat on Mindy with an aqua and gold sari,” Perez explains. “For Mindy, it was so chic, but I would also pair the aqua and gold coat with a black sweater and jeans. It’s about using the coats as a pop of color.”
And those pops, even for new mom Mindy (the character)? Perez says they’re not going anywhere. “Since Mindy’s a new mom, I think everyone expected her to be more casual. But Mindy [Kaling] said she wants us to bring the character’s fashion game up even more!” he tells Us. “We love discovering new brands and creating fashion moments on the show. The costumes have become [just as much of] a main character that everyone loves.”
