Hair today, gone tomorrow.
Rihanna gave a glimpse of her newly cropped coif in L.A. September 5, one day before the MTV Video Music Awards. The “Cockiness (Love It)” singer proudly officially unveiled her shorter hairstyle on the red carpet the following night, wearing a custom Adam Selman dress, Neil Lane earrings and Jacqui Aiche rings.
Nominated in six categories, Rihanna, 24, brought home the Video of the Year Moonman trophy for “We Found Love (feat. Calvin Harris).” Directed by Melina Matsoukas in September 2011, the music video featured Rihanna with long, curly blonde hair.
Though Rihanna has changed up her hairstyle several times since shooting the “We Found Love” music video, her longtime hairstylist, Ursula Stephen, insists her latest makeover was a long time coming.
“We had been talking about going short for a little while now and actually planned to do it the following week, but I just felt like, why wait? Let’s do it today!” Motions Global Ambassador Stephen tells Us Weekly exclusively. “And Ri said the same thing. She was ready for her short hair again!”
(For upkeep, Stephen advises wrapping the hair in a silk scarf at night. “Style with fingers using a cocktail of the Motions Radiating Gloss and shine enhancing pomade and you are ready to go!” she says.)
After Rihanna picked up her Moonman trophy during the MTV broadcast, her abusive ex, Chris Brown, 23, stopped her as she returned to her seat. The blue-haired “Turn Up the Music” singer then kissed Rihanna on the lips and gave her a hug, keeping his arm around her waist.
During an interview on Oprah’s Next Chapter in August, Rihanna admitted her run-ins with Brown at awards shows are still “awkward . . .My stomach drops and I have to maintain this poker face and not let it get to the outer part of me. I have to maintain that and suppress it.”
