Rachel Zoe Shares Her Back-to-School Tips for On-The-Go Moms and Kids

Back to school time is coming faster than we know it! With summer ending soon, Stylish sat down with famed designer and CEO Rachel Zoe to get her tips for getting herself and her kids ready for the fall days. While Zoe, 46, admitted that getting her boys Skyler, 7, and Kaius, 4, ready and dressed in the morning can often look like "a Saturday Night Live skit," the mom of two shared some insight into making the process easier for both little ones and their parents. And when it comes to getting herself dressed, Zoe shared the must have versatile pieces she can't wait to rock from her new Fall 2018 Box of Style launching today, Monday, July 30. On Practical Mom-Wear

"I really try and wear things that are very wearable longterm, meaning, if I get dressed at 8 a.m., I know that I'm going to be wearing it for many hours," Zoe explains. "I make sure that it's not something precious that will wrinkle or something I have to be self aware of how I move in. I would say I'm much more practical in how I get dressed now," she adds. As for some fall staple items she recommends? "I want something that I can throw over everything, from jeans and a tank to a little knit dress to trousers, so I love the Cleobella Savigny Capelet in my Fall 2018 Box of Style. It's a draped knit with a bordeaux pattern and belt and it's beautiful," she tells Stylish. "There's also an incredible necklace exclusive for the Fall Box that I designed with Ettika," she says. "Women are constantly commenting on how I wear a lot of necklaces and layer different things, so this piece has several layers in the chain and you can adjust it to make it shorter or longer and you can really get a lot out of it."

The Key to Kids? Fabric Choice

Zoe says her sons aren't picky about her outfit choices as long as she chooses clothing that is soft. "As long as it's comfortable, they'll wear whatever I put on them," she says. "If anything itches or feels too stiff or structured they literally take it off and it won't even get past their shoulders," she explains. "I have to buy things that look cool but feel good on them, so that's my constant goal in styling my kids," she tells Stylish. And her go-to shops and brands? "For more formal occasions I love Bon Point and Ralph Lauren," she says. "I also love the stores eggy and Poppy in L.A. and for more casual looks I love Lennon and Wolfe, NICO.NICO and Louis Louis."

The Back-to-School Staple That Carries a Message

For school supplies, Zoe says that backpacks are always important to her and her boys. "I started this thing with Baby2Baby because there is an overwhelming need to backpacks for children in L.A., so I've been on this mission with having my kids donate their backpacks," she says. "I always look forward to getting them backpacks that they get to pick out and that they're really excited about because their backpacks are a big thing to them because they hold everything that matters to them," Zoe explains. "My kids and I are working on putting the message out there for this tremendous need for backpacks for children and there are so many incredible brands including State and SoYoung," she shares.

Her Getting-Ready Routine

When it's time for them to get up and get dressed, Zoe reveals it's similar to a comedy sketch. "I always say it's like a Saturday Night Live skit every day, she jokes. "You get up and the clock starts ticking and you have to get sunblock on them, get them dressed, comb their hair and make them look like human beings, feed them, pack two lunches and then get them in the car," she says. "My husband Roger takes them to school and then I run out and continue the race and go to work, but I live for every second of it, so you kind of have to laugh your way through it," she shares.

Her Working Mom Philosophy

"I always have mom guilt and I live with it every single day, but there are more intense times of guilt and it's when I'm traveling a lot for work," Zoe admits. "Skyler understands what I do and I can now explain to him when I have to leave and why, but it's not easy and they want mommy," she says. "They would both crawl back into my body if they could," she jokes. "It's definitely really hard, but I think any working mother would tell you that you're pulled in both directions all the time. You have to just figure out each day as it comes," she adds.
