How to Re-create Blake Lively’s Soft, Summery Waves at Home

Blake Lively
Blake Lively has been working the softest waves this summer, and we know just how you can recreate the style.

These waves are on our wavelength! Blake Lively has been running around Manhattan promoting Café Society while modeling the softest, smoothest curls — and in humid 90-degree weather, no less. While she seems to be accomplishing an extraordinary feat, her hairstylist says that her luxurious, frizz-free mane comes down to one product.

“It’s my favorite,” Rod Ortega, Lively’s go-to stylist, tells Us Weekly of the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Extraordinary Oil. “It’s really fabulous for any kind of hair.” He doesn’t use much — just a half a pump or so — but that’s really all it takes to keep Lively’s tresses flawless. “It protects the hair but also gives it shine,” he explains. “Plus, it keeps the style really, really light and movable.”

As Ortega also notes, “Blake’s pregnant. She looks good. She has a glow! You don’t need to do too much. Just [create] something simple and soft and pretty.”

After he works the oil into her ends and combs it through, Ortega, whose client list include Allison Williams and Amal Clooney, rough-dries Lively’s hair to boost the texture and volume. “You want to almost scrunch it ’80s-style — then you get the body,” he says. Next, he smoothes the actress’ hair here and there with a 1.5-inch Ibiza bristle brush.

The celeb stylist then gets to curling, starting at the bottom and working his way up. Depending on the mood of the ensemble — is it more beachy, like her lemon Jenny Packham gown topped by a denim jacket, or sweet and girlish, à la her coral Jonathan Simkhai frock? — Ortega picks his iron of choice. He switches between the T3 Whirl Trio, T3 BodyWaver Styling Wand and a born-again favorite, hot rollers. “I’m getting back into hot rollers — they give a nice, natural set!” he says.

He spritzes a bit of L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray — which he favors for its flexibility — and she’s set to go. “It takes me about 45 minutes [with Lively] from start to finish, because she also has shoes and clothes. But I think the woman at home could do this in 30 minutes or less,” he said.
