Wearing red eyeliner is, admittedly, a risky choice — celebs tend to avoid the shade because it registers as tired and sick (the expression “red-rimmed eyes” didn’t come out of nowhere!). But Sarah Hyland proved that with the right application, the color can give off a smoldering glow.

While attending the L.A. premiere of Finding Dory on Wednesday, June 8, the Modern Family star’s colorful choice of eye makeup warmed up her whole face. And it provided the perfect complement to her vibrant crop top and midi skirt, both by Alice + Olivia, and Giuseppe Zanotti Design sandals.

To achieve Hyland’s red-eye results, it’s all about the execution. “Red is a tricky color, so placement and how softly it was applied was key,” celeb makeup artist Allan Avendano told Us Weekly. “I laid down [MAC Cosmetics Pigment in Naked Dark,] a good, neutral soft-brown shade all over the lids [as a base], then went straight into the liner. Using MAC Cosmetics Lip Liner in Cherry, I started with a thin line in the center of the eyes and made it thicker toward the outer corners. [After,] I smudged the bottom lash line with the same [color] and buffed in a burgundy-brown shade to soften it.”

Because the focus was on her eyes, Avendano, who also works with Chrissy Teigen and Zendaya, made sure everything else was toned down, yet flawless. “No better way to get [perfect skin] than using MATCHCo custom foundation. I scanned Sarah beforehand and received her foundation in time for the premiere,” he said. “After applying the foundation with a dry buffing brush, I [added] more to areas that needed more coverage and then used a wet Beauty Blender to make everything seamless.”

He then lightened the area under her eyes with concealer and used an illuminating bronzer as her blush for a sun-kissed look. “We finished off with a natural lip liner matching her own lip color with Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Liner in Pillowtalk, and added Dior Rouge Baume in Spring, a soft pink-nude tinted balm,” Avendano told Us.
