Alex Pettyfer isn't a bad guy.
In fact, the 21-year-old actor is just "misunderstood."
In an April interview with VMan magazine, Pettyfer described L.A. -- where he now lives -- as "this insidious pool where nearly everyone lives in fear. Geographically it's fantastic… but socially it's disgusting." He added that the city was a "s--thole" and that all the women who lived there were "c--ts."
So how does the Big Apple compare? "I love New York," he told E! Online Wednesday.
"I love L.A., too," he added quickly, backtracking on his previous comments. So those previous opinions on the "s--thole" of a city? "I don't think I was so much misquoted as misunderstood."
His publicist chimed in: "The most misunderstood boy in America!"
He's had some other public image blunders. After Pettyfer and Dianna Agron split in February, a source told Us Weekly the Glee star was "terrified" of her ex. The source added Pettyfer "absolutely lost it" and even threatened Agron, 25, during a phone chat. (His rep denied this.)
Before the I Am Number Four costars called it quits, the British bad boy got into a heated confrontation at a West Hollywood club with Sebastian Stan, accusing the Black Swan star of hooking up with Agron.
Still, Agron defended Pettyfer's softer side. "Alex might see himself as a bad boy, but he's actually very sweet in real life," she told Sugar magazine in its Winter 2011 issue.
