Ben McKenzie Explains Head Injury at Gotham Premiere: “I Hit a Concrete Pillar With My Head”

Ben McKenzie talked about the head injury he sustained on the set of Gotham at the show's NYC premiere on Sept. 15.

Gotham might want to invest in a stunt double if they plan on keeping leading man Ben McKenzie around. The hunky O.C. alum, 36, suffered a severe head injury while filming a scene for the upcoming FOX superhero drama.

The longtime TV actor, who plays a young Detective James Gordon in the series, posted several Instagram photos of the accident on Friday, Sept. 12.

“Yeah, it’s from a fight scene on Friday,” McKenzie explained to Us Weekly at the show’s NYC premiere on Monday, Sept. 15. “I hit a concrete pillar with my head.”

Sustaining the injury on his 36th birthday, the Southland star remained lighthearted when writing about it on social media.

“Holy concrete wall, Batman! #gotham,” he captioned an image, adding, “Happy Birthday to me. Fight sequence gone awry. Don’t ram your head into concrete pillars kids. #gotham.”

Despite his nasty head gash and bruise, McKenzie looked polished and ready to go at the premiere, gushing about his character.

“He’s an old-school hero in an antihero age, and I think that’s kind of refreshing,” he told Us. “So hopefully, they can kind of root for him as he battles these bad guys.”
