Katie Couric, Larry King, and Maria Shriver are among the celebrities who have taken part in an outpouring of Twitter tributes honoring the late 60 Minutes correspondent Bob Simon who tragically died after a car crash on Wednesday, Feb. 11.

CBS2 reported the news that Simon, 73, was riding in the backseat of a town car that lost control on the West Side Highway in Manhattan. The driver of the car struck a Mercedes, and then struck the middle barrier of the highway.

The CBS news vet was rushed to hospital, but died later from injuries sustained in the accident.

"Heartbreaking news about Bob Simon of @60Minutes, a brilliant writer and reporter and someone I admired deeply," Couric wrote via Twitter on learning of Simon's sad passing. “My heart goes out to Bob’s family. I worked with him. True journalist,” added Shriver.

“So sorry to learn of the passing of Bob Simon. He was a great reporter & wonderful man," King tweeted. "A frequent guest of mine. So sorry to hear this. RIP.”

Anderson Cooper expressed his shock with the tweet, “Stunned to report the death of legendary CBSNews correspondent #BobSimon,” and tennis legend Billy Jean King was also quick to respond. "Bob Simon was a legendary journalist. Always admired his work and devotion to getting the true story,” she wrote. “My thoughts are with his family.”

Dan Rather added his response to the outpouring of emotion, remembering Simon as a dear friend. “Condolences to the family of my friend and long-time colleague, CBS News Correspondent Bob Simon,” he wrote.

Alyssa Milano was another star, clearly shocked by the sad and sudden news. "Oh no,” she wrote, while linking to a report of Simon's death. Al Roker was similarly succinct, writing, "What a loss.”

Other celebs who expressed sympathy, shock and sadness at the news include Andy Cohen, Dane Cook, Piers Morgan (who had never met Simon but wished he had), Gilbert Gottfried, and Seth Meyers, who wrote, “Gutted to hear the news about Bob Simon. An absolute master of his craft.”

Simon, an acclaimed journalist, who achieved numerous awards throughout his career, including 27 Emmy awards, is survived by his wife Françoise Simon and daughter Tanya, who is a producer for 60 Minutes.
