Finally at a steady state. Bristol Palin and Dakota Meyer revealed their secret wedding on Wednesday, June 8, capping off a year full of ups and downs.
The couple, who first met in 2014 when 27-year-old Meyer, a former U.S. Marine, was in Alaska to film an Amazing America episode. They fell head over heels for each other and got engaged in March 2015.
At the time, Bristol’s famous mom, former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, excitedly gushed about her daughter’s second engagement. (The first was to Bristol’s ex, Levi Johnston, in 2009.)
“Our families couldn’t be happier for Bristol and Dakota!” the 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate told Us Weekly in a statement. “We’re honored to welcome Dakota into our family. He’s an American hero and patriot whose service to our country — like all his fellow Medal of Honor recipients — has been above and beyond the call of duty; but even more important is he’s a good and kind man who loves Bristol and Tripp and is loved by them.”
Two months later, the pair called off their wedding just one week before the big day. Apparently, however, the pair kept in touch: seven months later, Bristol, 25, welcomed daughter Sailor. (She and Johnston share one son, 7-year-old Tripp.)
Meyer requested joint custody, but Dancing With the Stars alum Bristol sought primary custody with “reasonable” visitation and no overnight visits. They settled the matter in February and were awarded joint physical and legal custody of Sailor.
In April, the on-again, off-again couple then curiously began posting images of each other on their Instagram accounts, hinting at a reconciliation. On Tuesday, June 7, Meyer posted a telling photo of the pair in a tropical locale, with Bristol’s ring prominently displayed on her finger.
“On one hand, we know that everything happens for a reason, and there are no mistakes or coincidences,” he wrote, quoting Kabbalah guru Yehuda Berg. “On the other hand, we learn that we can never give up, knowing that with the right tools and energy, we can reverse any decree or karma. So, which is it? Let the Light decide, or never give up? The answer is: both.”
