Saving the world, one less pizza box at a time. Vinnie’s Pizzeria in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn just upped the pizza game. The restaurant tweeted out a photo of their genius, carb-a-licious creation — a pizza served inside a box made out of pizza — on Wednesday, April 27, and the concept has since gone viral.
"Introducing The PIZZA BOX PIZZA! A pizza box made entirely out of pizza! No waste, 100% pizza and 100% delicious," Vinnie's shared, along with a mouth-watering photo of the cheesy creation.
And according to local reports, the environmentally friendly pizza creation is no joke.
Sean Berthiaume, one of the co-owners of Vinnie’s, told ABC 4 that he thought of the pizza-box pizza during downtime while reflecting on the amount of greasy boxes he sees get thrown out daily.
"I thought, What if you can make something that you can eat every part of?" Berthiaume explained.
He revealed to AMNY that turning his idea into reality wasn’t exactly easy. "The hardest part was the lid of the box,” he said. "That needs to be stiff to be able to open and it can’t have cheese or sauce on it or that will drip." It turns out the solution was to just bake the lid sans cheese and tomato sauce, and instead just use garlic and oil to keep it crispy.
The restauranteur also told NBC News that they’re still trying to figure out how to best deliver the culinary creation without the traditional cardboard container. “We’re kind of working out the kinks here,” he said. “The intent is to not have the box.”
So for now, they’re wrapping the $40 pie within a pie with foil, and placing that in a pizza bag to keep things sanitary.
That said, the internet still appreciates Vinnie’s for thinking outside box.
