But though the Hollywood couple have been notoriously tight-lipped about their relationship, they have allowed a few choice sound bites to slip through during the course of their three-and-a-half-year romance.
The pair first met on the set of 2011’s The Rum Diary, when Depp, 52, was still with his longtime love, Vanessa Paradis. (They announced their split in 2012 after 14 years and two kids together.) Heard, 30, was in a relationship with photographer Tasya van Ree at the time.
After months of secretly dating, the pair finally confirmed their relationship when the actress accompanied Depp and his children — Lily-Rose, 16, and Jack, 14 — on the international press tour for The Lone Ranger in July 2013.
Take a look back at some of the things the pair have said about their relationship over the years.
“You can’t help but adore his talent, his passion, his magnetic force that pulls you into all his brilliance.” — Heard, during a press tour for The Rum Diary in 2011
“As far as having more kids, it’s easy for me – and Amber should have the opportunity to have kids if she wants. Let’s face it: Practicing for it is fun, and it’s all wonderful.” — Depp, on wanting to have children with Heard in an April 2014 interview with The Mirror
"The thing that really scares me is the potential of losing my freedom. I never want for my life to lose the ability to transverse the world, with freedom and ease. The freedom and ease I have worked so hard to acquire for myself." — Heard, on what scares her most about marriage, in the July 2015 issue of Elle magazine
“We connect on a lot of levels, but the first things that really got me was, she’s an aficionado of the blues. I would play a song, some old obscure song, and she knew what it was. She’s very, very literate. She’s a voracious reader as I have been, so we connected on that as well, and she’s kind of brilliant and beautiful. I’m a lucky man.” — Depp, at the November 2015 premiere of her film The Danish Girl
“[It’s] an honor and the greatest, most surprising gift I have ever received in my life. I feel new flavors that I didn’t know existed. New colors that I didn’t know existed have been added to my life. I’m so happy.” — Heard, on being a stepmother to Depp’s two children, in the December 2015 issue of Marie Claire
“I also have to thank my wife, Amber, for putting up with me, for living with all these characters, which can’t be easy. It’s hard for me — it’s got to be hard for her.” — Depp, on his many eccentric movie roles, at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January 2016
