Kendall Jenner revealed in a new Vogue interview that looking at photos of her father, Caitlyn Jenner, prior to her male-to-female transition, inspires mixed emotions.
“Sometimes I look at a picture of my dad when she was a guy, and it makes me a little sad — I get emotional. You have to get past it — you’ve got a new person to love,” the model, 20, told the fashion magazine for its September 2016 cover story. “It’s kind of a blessing in disguise — if that’s not the wrong way to say it.”
Although watching Caitlyn, 66, who came out as transgender in an April 2015 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer, go through her transition was initially difficult, Kendall is now completely unfazed by her dad’s decision to live authentically.
“I knew it was going to have its rough phase, but it’s all super normal now,” she revealed. “It’s not weird at all.”
While Kendall is happy for the former Olympian — who made her debut as Caitlyn by posing for the cover of Vanity Fair in June 2015 — the Keeping Up With the Kardashians beauty once worried that her dad’s new life as a woman might cause her to feel disconnected from the person whom she credits for teaching her how to be a “tomboy.”
“We had ATVs and go-carts, and I grew up riding them all the time, which is why I’m a good driver,” Kendall recounted to Vogue. “It’s super ironic to think about now, but it’s something I can thank my dad for: how much of a tomboy I was.”
She added: “That’s why I think the whole thing — her transition — was really hard for me, because I was like, ‘But you taught me everything tomboy!'”
