Getting animated! Laurie Hernandez and her Dancing With the Stars partner Val Chmerkovskiy re-created the supermarket dance scene from the new animated flick Sing in a cute video the Olympian shared on Friday, December 16.
“I’m so excited to share this video with you all!” Hernandez, 16, captioned the video clip, which she posted on Twitter and Instagram. “I got to recreate a scene from @singmovie with a very special guest. Don’t miss SING in theaters this Wednesday!”
In the fun clip, Hernandez mimics the dance moves of a mother pig, voiced by Reese Witherspoon, as she strolls down a supermarket aisle in a pink button-down shirt and capri jeans. The gold medalist pretends to stifle a yawn before the sounds of “Bomboléo” by the Gipsy Kings comes on the speakers.
Hernandez soon goes from shaking her booty to the beat to picking a salt and pepper shaker off the shelves to shake like maracas. At one point, the Dancing With the Stars season 23 winner even shows off some fancy footwork as she twirls and glides across the brightly lit store.
The only difference between the mirrorball trophy winner’s moves and the original scene in the animated film? She spots her DWTS partner, Chmerkovskiy, in one of the aisles and grabs him for a quick spin as the pair exchange winks.
To cap off her epic routine, Hernandez leaps over a table piled high with oranges, a la Sing’s mother pig, and slides on her knees. “That was awesome,” a voice over the supermarket speakers tells her.
The petite athlete stole America’s hearts when she went up against fierce competition on season 23 of DWTS, and in an exclusive blog for Us prior to the finale, the Olympian called the experience “bittersweet.”
“It’s exciting that we were able to make the finals, but at the same time I don’t want it to be over!” she wrote. “I feel like I blinked and the season went by. I feel like Val and I just met for the first time — I look back at doing that first week cha-cha, and now we’re rehearsing the freestyle for the finale. It’s so sad! But it’s okay because my mom already accepted him into our family. She said, ‘Oh, he’s just like another son of mine!’ So I think we’re definitely going to stay in touch after this.”
Hernandez is currently on the DWTS tour, which kicked off on Friday, December 16, in Reno and will travel to 43 cities.
