Malia Obama reps the Beast Coast! A mysterious new photo of President Obama‘s eldest daughter wearing a hip-hop group’s T-shirt is garnering attention across the Internet after it was posted on social media on Sunday, Jan. 4.
In the picture, the 16-year-old political scion poses in a white T-shirt emblazoned with the logo of Brooklyn-based collective Pro Era. Malia hoists both arms behind her head as she gives the camera a wide-mouthed expression that is neither a frown nor a smile. She has double-ear piercings and wears her hair up in a ponytail.
While the image’s exact origins and authenticity still remain unknown, Gawker reached out to Pro Era founder Joey Bada$$ for a statement on Monday. His rep responded that Pro Era had received the snapshot from “a mutual friend of Malia and the pro era member.”
Last August, another rare selfie of Malia featured the First Daughter at a Chance the Rapper show at the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago.
Public interest in Malia has risen in the past year as she and her 1younger sister Sasha,13, continue to display more personality. This past Thanksgiving, the girls received some criticism for their conduct (complete with classic eye-rolling!) during the annual White House turkey pardoning ceremony.
More recently, the two joined their parents for a family vacation in Hawaii, where they disembarked Air Force One looking all grown up. Last May, Michelle Obama joked about Malia getting her driver’s license.
“One child is going to be driving this summer,” FLOTUS said on Access Hollywood. “Look out!”
The proud mom added of Sasha: “My youngest loves dancing. She dances in an organized program several times a week, but they’re into what kids are into — they’re counting down to summer.”
