Solange Knowles Attacks Jay Z in Elevator as Beyonce Watches: Met Gala Timeline of What Happened That Night
Before the brawl came the ball! Beyonce's younger sister Solange Knowles rapidly became the Internet's most-searched name on Monday, May 12, after TMZ posted shocking footage of the singer seemingly attacking Jay Z in an elevator at a Met Gala after party. Us Weekly has new details about what happened before, during, and after the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala on Monday, May 5.
ON THE MET GALA RED CARPET:
Bey, 32, and Jay, 44, were adoring and affectionate as usual as they pulled up to the museum. An eyewitness told Us the superstars were the last to arrive on the carpet. At one point, the "XO" singer dropped a piece of jewelry, and her adoring husband quickly came to the rescue, even staging a mock proposal as he bended down to pick up the piece.
"Beyonce had the biggest smile," the eyewitness told Us, adding how Blue Ivy's parents "went inside, arm-in-arm." The "Drunk in Love" singer stopped by to chat with Us and said her dramatic Givenchy Haute Couture custom-designed gown was "actually more comfortable" than her dress from the 2013 Met Gala.
Before the Carters arrived, Solange, 27, had already hit the red carpet on the arm of designer Phillip Lim, whose peachy frock she wore to the star-studded soiree. The "Losing You" singer looked beautiful yet low-key as she debuted a fresh new haircut. Solange, known for her funky, bold style, accessorized her girly frock with diamond Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, a gold clutch by Anya Hindmarch, and ankle-strap Stuart Weitzman heels.
INSIDE THE MET GALA:
Mingle and mix! Beyonce was photographed inside the bash smiling and posing alongside fellow superdiva Rihanna. The singer also posted photos to her Instagram from inside the Met Ball with Solange and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o.

Her husband Jay Z also schmoozed with fellow stars inside the museum. Kim Kardashian posted photos of the entrepreneur-rapper hanging out with Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and of course, his Watch the Throne album collaborator, Kanye West.

INSIDE THE BOOM BOOM ROOM:
An eyewitness at the star-studded Met Gala after party, which was held downtown at the Boom Boom Room at the Standard Hotel, said nothing "out of the ordinary" was witnessed at the bash. The insider noted that Beyonce and Solange hit the dance floor with Naomi Campbell, while Jay Z "hung back at one of the fireplace areas."
The same insider mentioned that the trio "did abruptly leave," but there was no drama leading up to the stars' departure.
As witnessed in the footage (which had no sound), Beyonce first stepped into the Standard Hotel elevator, as her younger sister, husband, and another man trailed behind. Solange slowly cornered her brother-in-law before launching into a full-out attack mode on Jay Z. While Solange threw punches and kicks in his direction, a man immediately reacted by hitting the emergency stop switch in the elevator and proceeding to subdue her.
"Beyonce tried to stay out of it," another source says. "She does not approve of violence. They are trying to put the situation past them now."
On Sunday, Solange tweeted, "This might have been top 10 days ever in life."
On Monday, hours after the shocking footage was leaked, the Standard Hotel released a statement to Us Weekly, expressing that it was "shocked and disappointed that there was a clear breach of our security system and the confidentiality that we count on providing our guests." The Standard added, "We are investigating with the utmost urgency the circumstances surrounding the situation and, as is our customary practice, will discipline and prosecute the individuals involved to our fullest capacity."
With no clear understanding of why the fight took place, various memes—using the hashtag #WhatJayZSaidToSolange—quickly started trending on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and more.
Neither Jay nor Solange's rep commented on the incident.
