Say “ouch” no more! Breaking in a new pair of shoes is almost always a painful experience, so Us Weekly reached out to five red carpet fashionistas for some sole-saving advice. Find out how stars like Shay Mitchell and Julianne Moore keep their feet happy.

1. Shay Mitchell

“I wear [new shoes] around my house before I’ll ever wear them out,” the Pretty Little Liars actress admits. “I think that is so key.”

2. Sarah Hyland

Size matters to this Modern Family star. “Be careful of too big and too small,” she says. “But it’s better to be too big because then you can just put heel grips on it!”

3. Anika Noni Rose

“Sometimes if I have a shoe that I feel is a little too snug, I’ll put another shoe in it and let it sit that way for a while,” the Dreamgirls actress reveals. “If it’s a leather shoe or if the heel is bothering you, you can rub the inside with Vaseline or something and sort of warm the leather up and soften it.”

4. Lindsay Ellingson

This Victoria’s Secret Angel wears her new shoes 20 minutes at a time. “Wearing them for short bits is best until you’re sure you’re not going to get blisters!”

5. Julianne Moore

The Oscar-winning actress has the simplest — but smartest — solution: “Don’t get shoes that are that uncomfortable to begin with!”
