Russell Brand, eat your heart out.

For her fifth appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards in L.A. September 6, the comic's ex wife, Katy Perry, looked glamorous in an Elie Saab dress that featured a sheer skirt and leather details. Wearing long black hair extensions, the pop star completed her look with Jimmy Choo shoes and a Sethi Couture ring.

The "Part of Me" singer, 27, walked the red carpet with her close pal, jewelry designer Markus Molinari. Perry's on-again boyfriend, John Mayer, 34, was M.I.A.

Inside the Staples Center, Perry was seated next to her close pal, Rihanna, 24. The once-wed star later presented the award for Best Pop Video to One Direction for their smash single "What Makes You Beautiful."

Prior to the event, Perry mistakenly thought the European boy band had canceled their performance. "If One Direction doesn't perform on the VMAs I am gonna jump off this ledge," she tweeted. After realizing she was misinformed, Perry wrote, "Oh, it was just a rumor."

Perry was nominated four categories: Video of the Year ("Wide Awake"), Best Visual Effects in a Video ("Wide Awake"), Best Art Direction in a Video "Wide Awake") and Best Female Video ("Part of Me").
