Rocker Billy Corgan Rips Into John Mayer

Billy Corgan is slamming John Mayer for his recent loose-lipped Playboy interview in which he detailed his sexual relationship with singer Jessica Simpson.

"He's trying to destroy his career," the Smashing Pumpkins frontman, 42, tells Rolling Stone in an interview outtake. "Rather than take a year off or change his musical direction, some part of it is irritating his soul to the point where he's trying to blow it up. Certainly a talented guy, but empathetically, standing on the sidelines, it's hard to watch someone literally burn their career to the ground speaking as somebody who's done it."

In his now-infamous March Playboy interview, Mayer, 32, said Simpson, 29, was "crazy" in bed and referred to her as "sexual napalm."

"I think for any person who has celebrity to sort of drop rocks at somebody else's feet like that, there’s things you should really just keep your mouths shut on," says Corgan. "There's things that should just be left alone."

Corgan -- who declined to confirm whether he and Simpson ever dated -- recently told Rolling Stone that Simpson is worthy of love. "If people knew her like I knew her, they would love her like I do," said the rocker, who helped her pen part of the theme song to her VH1 reality show, The Price of Beauty, which airs March 15.

On the Late Show With David Letterman Wednesday, Simpson said she wished Mayer -- whom she dated on-and-off from 2006 to 2007 -- would've kept quiet.

"Normally you would think that somebody you care about would keep those intimate details to himself," she said. "I mean, it was definitely a compliment, in a way, but I don't really want people to know that about me. That’s, you know, I’m like the good girl and then that happens."

When Letterman, 62, told her that she can be both a good and bad girl, Simpson replied, "Yeah, but that's the thing -- I am ... but he gave away my game!"

Though she has not talked to Mayer since the interview came out, she said, "I will always care about him. I think he’s a great person, a great musician, but I was very disappointed by the article."

    Billy Corgan is the closest thing I can see to a God. If he wants to defend Jessica...well, I can't say I am a fan of hers, but if he finds her interesting, I have to trust his opinion. John Mayer is shallow, and his songs show that. Billy is probably the deepest man on the planet. Jessica probably should've been with him at some point...but that was her choice (is her choice?) Maybe Billy sees her as a sister? Either way, his loyalty is quite an admirable trait. And by the way, I didn't see that as "slamming" John. It looked more like helpful advice.

    It doesn't matter what she does or did. She's still better than John. I'm sure he's jealous she's getting so much attention lately and he's not getting any love. I never was a fan of his and don't see how he ever got as far as he has. He's a terrible bore. Oh well, his career is in the toilet now where it belongs. He's so ugly as well.

    I thought from the moment that the Mayer interview broke that his TMI looked like self-sabotage and just some pretty unhealthy boundary stuff. (Corgan should know.) It's well documented how much Mayer loves the sound of his own voice so even though he objectified his ex, it was clear that it was all about him and his whole provocateur-thing and - oh, by the way - he just happened to disclose personal stuff about someone he claims to value and appreciate. Sick $hit, that. So now, in addition to his d ouche bag and tool labels he's officially made himself a leper. It's a good thing he enjoys dates with his hand as much as he does.

    People trash talk her because she is an annoying, no-talent mediawh@re who turned her life into a freakshow for cash. She could make a lot of money if she'd turn the public's hate of her freakshow existence into a circus side show instead of leaking stories about it to the tabloids and letting people insult her for free. She could charge admission to do nothing but stand on a stage and let people hurl garbage and insults at her. Then she could laugh all the way to the bank covered in maggots and oozing filth. That would really show the haters how "smart" she is.

    I'm confused... Mayer is certainly a pig, but his comments re: Jessica are the kindest things that I've seen said/written about her in years (until Corgan came to her "defense"). So, what's the problem?? She should be thanking Mayer for the (hopefully) short-lived revived interest in her.
