‘Game of Thrones’ Creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Reveal How Many Episodes (Not Enough!) Remain Before the Series Ends

Game over? Winter is definitely coming for Game of Thrones fans, as the hit HBO series’ cocreators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss told Deadline how many episodes remain before the Iron Throne is closed for business.

In an interview published on Monday, June 27, a day after the show’s hugely buzzed-about season 6 finale, the showrunners weighed in on the pressures of not straying from the goals they initially set out to accomplish with the series.

Referring to the fact that they recently sent advance season 6 screeners to the White House, Weiss said, “Like President Obama, we want to leave while all the people watching this show are really into it. Get out at a high point and not have it be, well thank god that’s over.”

Benioff was even more specific about the end being nigh, pointing out that they won’t create more than 75 (!) total episodes of the show that’s based on George R.R. Martin‘s A Song of Ice and Fire book series. (Sixty episodes have already run since its April 2011 premiere, and each season has tragically consisted of just 10 episodes.) It has long been speculated that the series is nearing the end of its run, but this is the most specific that producers have been about planning for the final episode.

“It’s two more seasons we’re talking about,” Benioff said. “From pretty close to the beginning, we talked about doing this in 70 to 75 hours, and that’s what we’ll end up with. Call it 73 for now. What Dan [Weiss] says is really true, but it’s not just trying not to outstay your welcome. We’re trying to tell one cohesive story with a beginning, middle and end.”

“We’ve known the end for quite some time, and we’re hurtling towards it,” he continued. “Those last images from the show that aired [Sunday] night showed that. Daenerys [Emilia Clarke] is finally coming back to Westeros, Jon Snow [Kit Harington] is king of the North and Cersei [Lena Headey] is sitting on the Iron Throne. And we know the Night King is up there, waiting for all of them. The pieces are on the board now … We wanted it to be one giant story, without padding it out to add an extra 10 hours, or because people are still watching it.”
