Gina Rodriguez Gets Emotional After Surprise Golden Globes 2015 Best Actress Win for Jane the Virgin

Remember the name! Rising star Gina Rodriguez pulled off an upset when she beat out Hollywood heavyweights and veteran actresses to win the Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. 

Rodriguez, 30, took home the honor for her work in The CW’s Jane the Virgin, beating out Lena Dunham for Girls, Edie Falco for Nurse Jackie, Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep, and Taylor Schilling for Orange Is the New Black

The Puerto Rican star expressed surprise and delight as her name was called. Rodriguez skipped to the stage in her gorgeous red carpet ensemble, wearing a strapless black Badgley Mischka gown paired with Jimmy Choo shoes. 

The Bold and the Beautiful alum got emotional as she was handed her statue, thanking God and showrunners for her big break.

“This award is so much more than myself,” Rodriguez gushed of her show, which features largely Latino actors. “It represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes.”

Choking up, the newly minted Golden Globe winner turned to her family, thanking her parents and siblings as she said, “Thank you to my mom and dad for telling me to dream and to never stop dreaming.”

“My father used to tell me to say every morning, ‘Today’s going to be a great day, I can and I will,'” Rodriguez added as she began to cry. “Well, dad, today’s a great day. I can and I did.”
