From paper salesman to international spy! John Krasinski is set to follow in the footsteps of such stars as Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck by playing the title role in the upcoming Amazon series Jack Ryan. The streaming service announced its 10-episode pickup Tuesday, August 16, but a premiere date has yet to be unveiled.
The series, based on Tom Clancy's books, centers on Ryan (Krasinski) as he attempts to stop a terrorist organization before it can carry out a global attack. Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel) cowrote the script for the project, which counts Michael Bay among its producers. Paramount TV and Skydance are the studios behind the show.
"We’re excited to add the Jack Ryan global franchise to our robust originals pipeline,” Amazon Studios boss Roy Price said in a statement. “Our customers will enjoy a compelling adaptation of the action-packed spy-thriller book series, further raising the bar for the quality level of storytelling that has made Prime Video a leading destination for content.”
There have been five films starring the character Jack Ryan, with such actors as Ford (1992's Patriot Games and 1994's Clear and Present Danger), Affleck (2002's The Sum of All Fears) and Chris Pine (2014's Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit) playing him over the years.
The new series marks Krasinski's first regular TV role following nine seasons playing the lovable Dunder Mifflin employee Jim Halpert on NBC's The Office, which signed off in May 2013. He has appeared in such films as Aloha, Something Borrowed and It's Complicated. News broke in April that the actor, 36, had landed the iconic Jack Ryan role for Amazon.
