Is Reese Witherspoon really responsible for Chelsea Handler's success? The Academy Award winner certainly seems to think so in a sneak peek from the third season of After Lately, premiering Monday, Feb. 25, at 10:30 p.m EST.
In the scripted clip, Handler gives her This Means War costar a tour of the new Chelsea Lately offices. Witherspoon, 36, comes prepared with a homemade housewarming gift from her children, 13-year-old Ava Phillippe and 9-year-old Deacon Phillippe. "You know you're like a second mother to them," Witherspoon says as Handler winces.
The actress then points to a rainbow rug hanging on Handler's wall. "This must have cost a lot of money," she says, later learning that it's by artist Kyle Bunting.
The actress then makes Handler uncomfortable by asking about her financial status. "You must be making a lot of money now, right?" she inquires. "But then again, you are childless, so that saves a lot of money, right?"
Shocked by Witherspoon's boldness, Handler stammers for a moment. "I mean . . . yeah," she says. "That's one of the main reasons that I am childless."
Witherspoon continues to pry into Handler's personal business. "So, how much money do you make?" she asks. "Like a year? Like last year?"
"I don't even know," Handler says, hoping to change the subject. "I would have to call my accountant."
"Oh, come on! You know!" Witherspoon replies. "Why don't you just tell me? I mean, that's like what friends do, right?"
"I don't think they do," Handler says, clearly annoyed. "I think it's pretty inappropriate to talk about how much money you make."
"Okay, you know what? This is not friendship," Witherspoon responds. "Friendship is about talking and sharing, and you continually do this. You know, you didn't have this life before you met me. It's kind of like you could break your life into two parts: Before Reese, B.R., After Reese, A.R. And this office is definitely, like, After Reese, A.R., okay? Not like I'm comparing myself to Jesus or anything."
An aghast Handler quips, "Okay, psycho! Well, why don't you go take something then? Take a pillow! What do you want, a commission?"
"I'm just going to take my candle and then I'm gonna go," Witherpsoon tells her 37-year-old pal.
"No!" Handler pleads. "That was a gift from Ava and Deacon."
"Fine," Witherspoon concedes. "They made 20 other ones. That one's not even special." Handler then yells at the married mother of three, who is making her way out the door. "This relationship is over, Reese!" she shouts. "This is it!"
After Lately airs Monday, Feb. 25, at 10:30 p.m. EST on the E! network.
