Meryl Streep is the only selling point in this otherwise-average biopic. As Margaret Thatcher, Britain's conservative prime minister from 1979 to 1990, the actress impeccably conveys her authority and vulnerability. (She also ages 40 years, with none of the plastic old-age makeup seen in J. Edgar.) But the film errs by lingering too much on her present-day dementia and sad conversations with her dead husband (Jim Broadbent), leaving audiences to wonder how she got that nickname in the first place.
