Charlize Theron delivers another Oscar-worthy performance in this ultra-dark comedy from Juno scribe Diablo Cody. Mavis (Theron) is a nasty, alcoholic novelist hell-bent on winning back her high school sweetheart. The fact that Buddy (the affable Patrick Wilson) is married and has a baby? Just "baggage," according to the clueless mean girl. In the hands of a lesser actress, Mavis could have become a caricature. But Theron plays the faded prom queen with a quiet vulnerability, giving a fully realized portrait of a woman who can't let go of her past glory days.
