Eight years after TLC launched its popular Say Yes to the Dress reality show, the Atlanta spinoff is featuring the franchise’s first transgender bride, Precious Davis, on Friday, January 15.

“They reached out. They wanted to feature us because our story is so inspiring,” Davis, whose fiancé is also transgender, tells Us Weekly. “Myles and I are trans activists, so the visibility of our love as a trans couple is really important to us. We thought it was a great opportunity to showcase our love.”

“We’re just like everyone else who has hopes and dreams and have these life moments that are important to us,” she adds.

But not only that, Davis, 30, wanted her dress-shopping experience to show that transgender women are just like all other women.

“I am a woman. I have the same challenges that other women face, especially when it comes to the physicality of how that manifests itself,” she explains, noting that as a transgender woman, she didn’t run into any issues when trying on dresses. “Many women come in many different shapes and sizes. There was no difference that a dress would fit me. I’m an extremely curvy woman, always have been.”

And like other brides-to-be, Davis — who is the assistant director of diversity recruitment initiatives at Columbia College in Chicago — had ideas of what her dream wedding dress would look like.

“I went into it thinking I wanted a dress that was sweetheart cut, and a mermaid cut at the bottom. But I ultimately went in there and said I wanted something grand. I want something opulent,” Davis says. “I ultimately went with a beautiful custom ball gown by Lazaro.”

Finding the dress of her dreams didn’t take the activist too long. Davis, who had an unlimited budget, tells Us she tried on only three dresses before she found the one!

“I knew this one, it was so grand and so opulent, there was nothing that could’ve topped that dress,” she says. “I mean, I looked. I looked through the entire store and had my pick and could’ve had whatever I wanted.… I wanted something opulent, something fit for a queen, something royal, and I definitely got that!”

Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta airs on TLC Fridays at 9 p.m. EST.
