A source tells Us Weekly that Anne Hathaway, 28, and James Franco grew to "hate each other" as they rehearsed to host the Oscars Feb. 27.

"She had to provide all the energy -- he was just phoning it in," says a second insider. ("James seemed in his own little world," during the Oscar telecast, says another source. "Producers were pissed.")

In fact, as UsMagazine.com reported Monday, after the awards, Franco, 32, skipped his own party at L.A.'s The Writer's Room.

"He went immediately back to NYC because he was pissed about how the show went," adds a third source.

Franco's rep responds, "This is absolutely not true,” while Hathaway's rep says, "Anne had a wonderful experience with him."

Still, fans should expect a new MC in 2012. Insiders say both Hugh Jackman and Billy Crystal want the gig again.

Georgianne Chavez .. I agree with you, I would love to see Sandra Bullock host it, she was funny announcing the nominees for best male actor. Love her sense of humor

I felt bad for Anne. She was killing herself out there being a true entertainer and Franco was being Franco. He's talented too but he always seems like he's in his own world. He just wasn't the right person for the job. Anne's a Hollywood starlet and James is anything but Hollywood, he is definitely an indie guy. You know, he's not really into the whole glitz and glamour of Hollywood.

I think Anne did a great job, James didnt seem that into it. If should of had someone who is funny as her co-host, I think it would of been better. She seemed to try to carry both herself and James throughout the show.

I think that Sandra Bullock should host, she is funny!

  • March 01, 2011 - 5:13pm May Chu Harding

James Franco contributed NOTHING as a host to the Oscars! What a bore.

  • March 01, 2011 - 5:11pm Kelly Dawn

I think Anne Hathaway would have done well if she had had someone like Hugh Jackman or Billy Crystal or someone with an actual sense of humor with her.

  • March 01, 2011 - 4:31pm Mary Caramadre Graham

I am a fan of both of them...BUT they were awful. Not funny. If Anne would have woo hooed one more time after announcing someone I was going to scream. I could have done better.

James Franco was so high, he was missing for the majority of the night. Could have sawn off an arm and nobody would have cared. Anne was out of her league. What the hell was the point of dragging out KIRK DOUGLAS, it didn't get the sympathy vote the guy could barly walk and talk. It seems I recall him being brought back just after his stroke a few years back. I guess with him and Michael Douglas the sicker you are your likley to get a "pitty gig". Check out the BAFTA's and miss the Oscars in 2012.

@Tony Brees, I'm not a Franco hater, you just jumped on me in a way that made no sense. I'm not trying to specifically insult you (and my apologies if you took it that way). My point was simply that I think he's taken on too much...if he wants a Ph.D., good for him--likewise for RISD and the rest. And if he do it all, and do it competently, (wow!), I'm impressed. And it's a great advertisement for education. But if he's just doing it for some form of weird bragging rights, I think he would do better to focus on things he can actually accomplish. If Yale (and RISD and the rest) interfered with his ability to host the Oscars, then he probably needed to pick one or the other...it's not like he's going to starve if he chooses one or the other, and meanwhile, we had to sit through a fairly boring awards show because he was thinking about his paper on Byron. Also, if he ultimately fails, I think it's negative publicity for education (which I don't like). And if he fails but claims to have succeeded, even worse, because that devalues the degrees that other people hold (who work hard for their degrees).

Oh, I can believe that, he looked like he hated having to stand next to her at the Oscars.

  • March 01, 2011 - 2:30pm Tony Brees

Yes Christopher Dodge, note I indicated PhD at Yale because it's a degree he's supposedly pursuing, and that I didn't list any degrees with the other schools mentioned. I also just told you I perhaps don't know the proper usage of the phrase "completed studies" geez. Note that I also wrote "my apologies." Talk about unforgiving! And thanks for calling me a fail! (I don't know what is with the kids using that word so much today in this context, SO NEGATIVE and discouraging, it kinda irks!) My whole point was to correct the school currently being attended, that is all, end of story. The "facts" are that he has studied or is currently studying at these schools, and those are the only "facts" I'm interjecting, thanks...and perhaps that is why he's preoccupied. No vehement defending here!

  • March 01, 2011 - 1:49pm Melissa Strickland Miles

Ann is fun and classy. Franco is a stoner. He needs to do another cover for Weeds magazine and stay off the Oscar stage.

  • March 01, 2011 - 1:48pm Christopher Dodge

BTW, I just read your comment: again (since you insist): "He's actually at YALE currently completing a PhD in English. He's already completed studies at NYU and Columbia." In the first sentence he's completing a degree, and he completed his degree from Columbia...but I'm supposed to figure out that in the second sentence you only meant a class or a couple of classes, not a degree at NYU? No, man...that's a fail.

  • March 01, 2011 - 1:43pm Christopher Dodge

@Tony Brrees, you started this little exercise of dissecting language and semantics by somehow asserting that "completed studies" didn't mean a degree and only meant...well, that Franco had taken classes at an institution. "Completed studies" usually means a degree. Or at least a class...and unless you have access to all of his transcripts, I don't really see how you could even claim the latter. You want to distribute facts, fine...let's hear them...not rumors churned out on various blogs...facts. And fine, you don't like or dislike Franco...why defend him so vehemently then? And why try to interject these "facts"?

I wonder when are we going to adress the elephant in the room. They were awful, her with her histerical laughter and it was all over his face that he wanted to be anywhere else but there. They were boring and did not give us anything unique to be remembered by.

  • March 01, 2011 - 1:41pm Randy Bellows

It was like Anne was trying very hard to be compatible, and he stood there squinting and looking weird. The Oscars stink for years now. No class and boring.

  • March 01, 2011 - 1:39pm Chelsea Coyle

she said how much she loved him....why do people have to write such stupid things? always trying to make trouble where there is none....

  • March 01, 2011 - 1:08pm Stacy Duensing Geiger

@Christopher Exactly! I really enjoyed the behind the scenes moments James Franco gave us by posting the videos and pics he took during the show. I thought it was very generous of him to take the time to do that for viewers and fans. He and Hathaway appeared to be having a good time together. Their hosting was better than many in the past.
