Bring on the waterworks! Just when we thought This Is Us would finally let Us set aside our tissue boxes, the fall finale on Tuesday, December 6, left viewers with the most unsettling news yet. Toby (Chris Sullivan) was seen hanging on for dear life, and fans have been praying for him to pull through. Will he be OK? Luckily, Justin Hartley (Kevin) gave Us Weekly his two cents on the situation.
After Toby partook in a rather grand gesture on Christmas Eve — flying across the country and professing his unwavering love for Kate (Chrissy Metz) — he succeeded in winning her back. But the couple's happy reunion was abruptly halted when Toby unexpectedly collapsed onto a coffee table. The episode ended with Toby attached to a series of machines while recovering from surgery. Can we all agree right now to keep #PrayForToby trending until This Is Us returns?
Hartley, 39, spoke to Us Weekly and other reporters at the Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday, December 11, about what's next for Kate's benevolent love interest. Sadly, Hartley didn't do much to allay our fears.
"You think you want to know, but you don’t want me to tell you," the actor bluntly states about Toby's fate. Could the situation really be that dire?
Sullivan recently tweeted out a photo from Paramount Studios, where the series films, but Hartley warns fans not to read too much into this or be quick to assume that Toby is back in action. Suggesting an alternative explanation for the tweet, Hartley explains coyly, “We’re in the middle of a reshoot thing. … Not to suggest that he dies or he doesn't."
Regardless, the Smallville alum is thrilled to be part of such a critically praised series. "It's so great to walk a red carpet or go out and be able to talk about the project that you're in, and I'm so proud of it," Hartley gushes.
Tell Us: Do you think Toby makes it out alive?
This Is Us airs on NBC Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET.
