Critics Slam New Moon

Thursday – November 19, 2009 – 7:07pm

New Moon pales in comparison to Twilight, according to the critics.

Chicago Sun-Times' Roger Ebert says "the characters in this movie should be arrested for loitering with intent to moan. Never have teenagers been in greater need of a jump-start. Granted some of them are more than 100 years old, but still: their charisma is by Madame Tussaud."

Ty Burr of The Boston Globe remarks: "Sorry, girls: The thrill is gone." He says that "where the first film’s director, Catherine Hardwicke, plugged into [author Stephenie] Meyer’s vision of supernatural teenage lust with abandon, Chris Weitz is stuck with a sequel that’s a morning-after mope-fest."

See Robert Pattinson's sexy pose at the New Moon premiere!

Burr also says that the film favors werewolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner) than vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson).

"When he's onscreen, Pattinson’s Edward is all emo posturing under a trembling bouffant - the actor suddenly seems to be embarrassed to be here," says Burr. "Lautner's performance, by contrast, has the warmth of an actual human."

Check out Kristen Stewart's biggest red carpet mishaps!

But Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times says Lautner and Kristen Stewart (who plays Bella) have no heat: "The connection between these two is so self-evidently non-romantic that it turns out not to be much of a diversion."

USA Today's Claudia Puig agrees, saying the the Bella-Edward romance is a bore and that "the pace picks up" once Jacob and his pals turn into werewolves. She gave the film 2.5 out of 4 stars.

Variety writes that ladies hoping to gaze at Pattinson the big screen " may be disappointed by Pattinson's reduced presence" in the sequel, "as his Edward appears predominantly in mumbling visions until a cliffhanger that brazenly sets up the next episode."

See the love lives of the New Moon stars!

Despite some harsh reviews, the film is still expected to earn more than $85 million during its first weekend (it has run up the biggest advance sales of any film in history). It opens in 4,024 locations, beginning with 3,500 performances at 12:01 a.m. Friday.

Besides, I hope the director of 3rd movie/even the 4th movie would pay attention to the most important thing: Don't overestimate the power of superficial muscle (Jacob) and underplay the depth of soul (Edward/Rob Pattinson). We're adults and not that shallow.

I love Twilight movie so much and enjoyed the plot from the beginning to the end. But New Moon failed to keep me in the seat all the time. Jacob has muscles but doesn't have chemistry with Bella. He's only a rubbery muscle-boy. I was bored in the middle of the movie and only got cheered up after Edward showed up at the end. The best part about Twilight is the nervous attraction between two leading actor/actress, not the werewolf or high tech fighting scene. Twilight is simpler but more touching. But it's OK to keep New Moon as a low. It makes me look forward to the 3rd movie. I just don't like the charactor of Jacob. He's annoying and no self-conscious.

I didn't see Twilight because of the choice of casting Kristen Stewart & Pattison for the main characters turned me off. After seeing New Moon I have to say that it was a huge mistake casting them as Bella & Edward. I really hope they recast Bella's character because Kristen Stewart ruined the movie with her terrible acting. That said, after reading the book series the movie just left me completely disappointed.

I'm a fan of the book but have, so far, been disappointed with the movies. I think New Moon will be the last of the movies I'll see. The blame can be handed to everyone from Meyers whiney musical pics, the directors choosing awful CGI and ridiculous posing of RP and those terrible flashes of his images. And, my problem with both movies WHERE'S THE HUMOR! The books, while wildly romantic make the fantascal possibility of a human girl falling for a vampire and befriending a werewolf are made plausible and fun by the humor betw Edward & Bella and Jake & Bella's lighthearted friendship. Non of that is in these terrible movies. That is the crux of what's missing in the posing angstiness. Kristen Stewart's fidgety hand movements yet mopey portrayal was distracting and annoying. KS needs to invest in the character because I think she's decent actress but doesnt have the chops to really carry the role of Bella IMHO. RPatz I loved in the Twilight movie but was wasted in this one. All the director did with him was pose him. He looked like he was going to cry or be constipated thoughout New Moon. Taylor Lautner was the decent but, gain where's Jacob's humor and sense of fun that is such a contrast from Edward. Plus I felt the loss of Jake's growth spurt. TL & KS had no romantic chemistry there for I found their romance just a shrug. The biggest makes in point to the director no really understanding what makes the books so appeal. Last note, the character of Rosalie looked AWFUL in this movie. Somehow the makeup and costume depts made this young actress look ancient, like a 50yr old washed up actress. The actorswho place ALics, Aro, Emmett & Carlisle were the best parts of the movie.

I completly disagree with everything that the critics said. I loved new moon, and I love twlight, and I can't wait for eclipse.

I liked New Moon. I will go see it again and again. It could have been longer. The book was pretty thick. I wanted to see more werewolf scenes. I am sorry Bella sucks. She is not a good actress or not for this character. She no sparks with none of the charcters, except the dad. Everyone else rocked. Of course, the books are excellent, they are better than the movie. The movie hypes book sells. I hope the next film learns and is better. I will go see it. Remember it is only the critics opinion and they do not speak for everyone.

I really think the movie was a bore Kristen( Bella) had me stuepin the entire time she definately didnot connect with the character in the book. Robert should have had a little more dramatic effect with his roles and taylor was awesome he is really good for a first time actor in a serious role. Clearly their is no passion between robert and kristen on screen but u can see it with lauthner. Maybe she should actually read the book she could actually portray wat bella is about. Sometimes i feel she is a lesbian yes!!! But i was ver very dissapointed in the movie. She never looked happy around edward her expression was blank in the entire movie. I give it a 2 out of 5

What pisses me off...is how people argue that the critics should read the books first. Really now, why should a critic need to read a book to review the movie? You shouldn't have to read a book to understand a movie, and that's what makes it bad. The movie is shallow and cheesy but a bit entertaining; too much angst for me. In any case, the it was more of a comedy than a love flick.

What many people fail to realize is that most of the movie critics out there are aged above the general target group of the movies and most likely have not read the books. From what I've seen most of the major critics on site such as rottentomatoes are men in their 30s-50s and up. In general men rate this movie saga lower than women due to the fact that it is essentially a "chick flick." I myself am a 20yr old guy who loves the books having read all4 in their entirety and as a true Twilight fan agree that yes the movies are not near as good as the books, but then again what movie is. For real Twilight fans that have read the books the movies are just a way to see what was written. Envision what they read to see it in real life how it was pictured in the mind. To all the critics and general population that bash the series without having read the books: Back off. without having read the books you can't have a full understanding of how the story progresses, the tone of the characters in ea of the sagas parts, or the full extent of the relationships of those characters. If you read the books you will know why Edward is more monotonous and gloomy in New Moon than Twilight as well as why Jacob and Bella have virtually no chemistry. This is without a doubt one of those series that you have to read the books to fully appreciate the movies. Without doing so you just make yourself look quite frankly like a fool that has no idea what their talking about.

I'm not going to lie, even though the storyline was really shallow I still enjoyed the book. It was a great example of teen angst and I thought it was quite entertaining--even comical--despite the fact that Meyer was probably going for the serious teen love triangle thing. Even though the series is not going to show up on my "Top Ten Best Books I've Ever Read" list, it was still decent. The juvenile plot line was perfect for the ignorant tweens of this day and age (which is probably why I didn't LOVE it); However the movie was so bad not even a moron would enjoy it. All of the basic concepts of film-making were blatantly disregarded, and the film was much like a high-school movie project done with a $40 dollar camera and some low-rate editing software. The special affects were EXTREMELY sub-par, and this cannot be blamed solely on budget; Even the lowest budget films have half way decent special affects, but the ones in New Moon were atrocious. The movie is most definitely one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life, and I've seen Hannah Montana.

Someone already said this but I'm going to say it again- have any of these critics even read the books? A mope fest- yes, that's what New Moon was- practically the whole book was about how Bella was so hurt that she practically wanted to die. The movies are never as good as the books since they can't encompass everything but I seriously think that Chris Weitz did an awesome job....much better than Catherine Hardwick. Seriously I loved Twilight but I don't think that she would have been a good choice for New Moon and I'm happy that someone else did it. I think Weitz and the cast did an awesome job! People need to enjoy it for what it's worth- it's not the whole book but I think it was a great adaptation of it!

DON'T BELIEVE THE CRITICS.There paid to say bad things about a film and granted sometimes there write but you should consider the fact that there probably old, grouchy people with no imagination or teen spirit plus they probably haven't even read the books so don't listen to them NEW MOON ROCK!!!
  • November 23, 2009 - 2:26pm srp Says:

Have these critics read the books? This movie was more like the book than Twilight was! Edward wasn't present in the book as much, and Jacob and Bella are not suppose to have much chemistry! Bella doesn't feel the same towards Jacob as she does towards Edward. I think that they did a good job in remaining as close as possible to the book! CRITICS READ THE BOOKS before you bash on the movie!

I refuse to watch New Moon since the acting in Twilight was so awful.

Who cares waht those critics sayz! they dont understand teenagers real lyfe and stephenie meyer can! those of u who thinks it's gay then u have no life! i bet ur not evn into romantic stuff! Bella is the best actress for acting real emotions she can play it so well she doesn't have to be so melodramatic like screaming after edward when he leaves her apart from her sleep scene that is totally understandable. Besides grown up peepz like olden kinda movies which has a lot of disgusting sex scenes which is so unnaprpiate and kids find it boring and tiring now they want movies which they can relate to not see who the best actor or actress is! so whateva 2 those people who dont like it!
