Maybe it's the "fishbowl" life that leads celebrities to take dangerous measures to get thin. The fact that Nicole gaining a few lbs has made it to the front page of every magazine and blog across the country, is a testament to America's obsession with weight.
We blame the publishers and fashion magazines, but let's face it..who buys them? They're only giving us what we want. For some sick reason many women enjoy looking at ridiculously thin women for motivation. Interestingly, research shows that white women have an unrealistic impression of how men want their women to look, while black women have more realistic ideas of what men like (accounting for their lower incidence of eating disorders). As a 21-year-old student who has struggled with an ed and body image issues, I'm so grateful to have finally "got it"! We think they want all sticks but many enjoy a sexy healthy looking figure. So get realistic, realize that women are built to have a little padding and hips to facilitate fertility and giving birth, and accept our beautiful bodies for whatever they are. We all come in different shapes and sizes and must not compare ourselves. (depending on genes and metabolism, some of us are more naturally lean or curvy, so the idea is to accept whatever your body's natural makeup is and NOT FIGHT IT! Everyone for health reasons should eat healthy following the food guide and engage in moderate exercise regularly, but I'm saying, don't overdo it or obsess about it! It's simply not worth it. Life is about so much more; enjoying time with loved ones, travelling, suceeding in school or your career and loving yourself.) So next time you judge someone walking down the street, or a celebrity in a glossy, as "too fat/thin or perfect", stop yourself...and replace those thoughts with, "what another example of a successful, strong and beautiful woman"!
