Stars tweeted in anticipation Wednesday that “Justice for Trayvon” would be served and a charge was, in fact, brought forth.
According to Global Grind, Florida state prosecutor Angela Corey brought charges against George Zimmerman, 28, in the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
Corey charged Zimmerman with second degree murder during a press conference Wednesday evening.
Police say Martin, a 17-year-old African-American, was fatally shot by Zimmerman in Sanford, Fla. on Feb. 26. Martin was walking to the house of his father’s girlfriend from a convenience store at the time.
Zimmerman, whose father is white and whose mother is Hispanic, was a neighborhood watch volunteer and called 911 to complain about a suspicious person. He claimed the teenager attacked him and was released without charges after claiming self-defense.
The case became a nationwide debate over race and self-defense. After weeks of protests across the U.S., celebs are tweeting their reactions to the news.
“Very proud of the work Global Grind has done seeking justice for Trayvon!” Russell Simmons tweeted. “Zimmerman to be charged…”
He added, “As we proceed…we will do so with the utmost dignity, respect and compassion. #NoViolence #JusticeForTrayvon”
Taraji P. Henson retweeted a comment regarding Martin’s parents stating, “sending all of my positive thoughts and love to Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin right now. #JusticeForTrayvon”
Ghostface Killah (real name: Dennis Coles) warned protestors to remain calm.
“Yow, whatever the outcome is in the #TrayvonMartin Case… I need you knuckle heads to keep your cool,” he tweeted. “No riots, looting, etc. Stand Firm rt.”
“We working to hard for Justice so don’t give these people what they are expecting from ‘US’ Remain Peaceful Stay in DUAA no negative press.”
