’Tis the season for a red lip! While the official start of the holiday season may still be a month away, it is never too early to start gathering ideas, which is why we are taking notes on the ultra-glam red lip Natalie Portman rocked at the L.A. Dance Project’s Annual Gala on Saturday, October 20. The Black Swan actress paired her crimson pout with glowing skin and a matching scarlet gown, and we’ve got the surprisingly simple step-by-step guide to exactly how to recreate the festive look.

The longtime Dior ambassador wore, naturally, a rouched red number by the French fashion house to the annual event for the dance company founded by her husband Benjamin Millepied in 2012, and makeup artist Mélanie Inglessis dreamed up a beauty look to match.

Calling her a “lady in red” on Instagram, the pro said that it was all about creating beautiful skin and a subtle flush that allowed the statement lip to take centerstage. To begin, she prepped the actress’ complexion with the un-tinted Dior Capture Dreamskin Fresh & Perfect Cushion in #000 to nourish and prime. She then evened our her skin tone and any imperfections using the Diorskin Forever foundation, which served as a radiant base.

A bit of the Dior Rouge Blush in #028 Actrice (a light coral) helped to warm up the apples of the cheeks, while a couple coats of the Diorshow Mascara in #090 Pro Black on the top and bottom lashes created a flirty fringe effect that allowed Inglessis to skip eyeshadow and liner all together.

Instead of focusing on the peepers, the makeup artist ensured Portman’s pout shined (literally!) by coating the lips in Rouge Dior Ultra Rouge lipstick in #777 Ultra Star. Inglessis describes the satin-like cherry shade as a “true red” that brightened up the Academy Award winner’s gorgeous smile.

In just four steps (foundation, blush, mascara and lipstick), Portman proves you can rock an Old Hollywood-inspired look that works as well on the red carpet as it would at one of those dozen holiday parties you’ll soon have on the calendar.
