Say goodbye to the "Science Guy." Though he has a huge fan base, Bill Nye was eliminated on week three of Dancing With the Stars Monday, Sept. 30. The 57-year-old Bill Nye the Science Guy star was sent home after dancing with a leg injury and earning low scores from the judges.
After tearing his quadriceps tendon last week, Nye ignored doctor's orders and performed a robot jazz routine to Daft Punk's "Get Lucky." Wearing a leg immobilizer, Nye tried his best to dance with pro partner Tyne Stecklein without moving his leg too much.
Judge Len Goodman praised him for his effort, saying, "Bill, to perform with that type of injury, it takes guts, it takes determination and bravery . . . that shows a lot about the man. Well done," Goodman said. But the judges only awarded him 16 points, and, when combined with viewers' votes, he was sent packing.
"There's people here who are working hard, who are so good," Nye said after being eliminated. "You see them improving every week. I'm not going to be able to keep up for that. But what breaks my heart is Tyne not being able to stay in. She's fantastic."
"Thanks for keeping me in this long," he added. "These other people are extraordinary. It's been really cool. It's been a great experience."
Nye's partner Stecklein previously told Us Weekly that Nye taught her a lot about science during the competition. "All day, every day!" she said. "Whenever we take a water break I learn something new scientifically! Whether I understand it or not is a different story!"
