Cue "Sugar, Sugar" and "Hitchin' a Ride!" After almost two decades, the 1995 fan-favorite Now and Then may be coming to the small screen. The film's screenwriter, Marlene King, revealed the news during a Reddit AMA on Wednesday, June 11.
"We're talking about it. We're talking about Now & Then the TV series," King wrote when asked about a possible sequel. "ABC family has shown a little bit of interest in that, so we're still talking about that."
"People tweet about this to me all the time," she continued. "They'll even send me photos of themselves watching the movie on a sunday afternoon."
The coming-of-age film was set in the '70s and '90s and centered on four 12-year-old girls trying to raise money for a pink tree house during one memorable summer in 1970. It starred Christina Ricci (young Roberta), Rosie O'Donnell (Roberta), Thora Birch (young Teeny), Melanie Griffith (Teeny), Gaby Hoffmann (young Samantha), Demi Moore (Samantha), Ashleigh Aston Moore (young Chrissy), and Rita Wilson (Chrissy.)
King has been brainstorming about a reboot for nearly two years now. Back in October 2012, the writer—who also has a hand in ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars—told MTV News her ideas for what a Now and Then TV series would be like.
"It's definitely the same characters, but it won't be the same time period," she explained. "It will be like if the adults were 40 now and the girls were teenagers. We'll probably pick it up when the girls are 16, but it will be in the 1980s as opposed to the '70s because that's sort of the 'then' of our current 'now.'"
