That’s gonna leave a mark. Jim Carrey hit the stage — hard — during his bit with Dumb and Dumber To costar Jeff Daniels at the 2014 MTV VMAs on Sunday, Aug. 24, in Inglewood, Calif.
On hand to present the award for Best Pop Video, the 52-year-old comedian went for laughs by singing, dancing, and just generally goofing off with The Newsroom actor Daniels, 59. He was performing a slapstick routine with a scarf when he accidentally slipped and fell backward, landing flat on his butt.
“I meant to do that!” he quipped as he jumped back to his feet, laughing. Added Daniels: “It was planned! We rehearsed that.”
Ever the pro, Carrey used the blunder to his advantage and worked a second tumble into his bit. “That was amazing! Let me try it again,” he joked, before somersaulting back onto the floor.
Of course, the Kick-Ass 2 star’s gaffe wasn’t the only unplanned moment during the show. Earlier in the night, two-time performer Nicki Minaj had a wardrobe malfunction while performing “Bang Bang” with Ariana Grande and Jessie J. After failing to complete a quick wardrobe change offstage, she re-emerged with her dress undone and had to hold it together with her hands for the rest of the song.
