Love (and the U.S. women’s soccer team) wins! On Sunday, July 5, star forward Abby Wambach helped lead the U.S. team to a 5 to 2 victory over Japan in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Wambach, 35, who ended up hoisting the trophy over her head along with team captain, Christie Rampone, had a very important person to thank the minute the final whistle was blown.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist, who had never won a World Cup before, immediately ran to her wife of almost two years, Sarah Huffman, who bent over the railing from the stands to kiss Wambach on the field.
The touching moment was captured for all the world to see and quickly circulated on the Internet in the form of sweet Vines and videos.
It was an especially moving gesture in light of the recent landmark Supreme Court ruling, legalizing same-sex marriage in all 50 states.
