Read in between the tweets, 1D fans. Twenty-four hours after Zayn Malik sent teenage hearts aflutter announcing his breakup from fiancee Perrie Edwards, the singer has broken his social media silence. In a string of Twitter posts aimed mostly at his fans, Malik, 22, slipped in a cryptic tweet that some think was meant for ex Edwards, also 22.
"You just can't do enough for some people, I guess," mused the newly single star online Wednesday, Aug. 5. Later, Malik thanked fans for their support, and vowed to deliver an "amazing" album — his first as a solo artist — before too long.
A source told Us Weekly that Malik initiated the split with Little Mix's Edwards, ending their two-year engagement. Another insider confirmed that the former 1D hunk — who split with the boy band in March — is eager to make a fresh start. "He just wanted to move on and start over in all ways," the insider told Us.
Edwards, who'll perform with her girl group at Aug. 16's Teen Choice Awards, went through the wringer at the tail end of their relationship. "She's so lovely and she put up with so much," a UK source told Us. "Her close friends are totally relieved it's over so now she can move on."
To soothe her pain, Edwards has turned to her Little Mix BFFs, including bandmate Jesy Nelson. On Monday, hours after her breakup news went public, Edwards' pal Nelson applauded her friend's resilience by posting an Instagram bikini pic proclaiming "Perrie Winkle" her "Woman Crush Wednesday . . . even though it's not Wednesday."
Edwards herself showed Malik just what he was missing when posing in a bridal-inspired sleeveless gown on Instagram. "All glammed up and ready to boogie!" the singer posted.
