She’s game! Idina Menzel, who plays Elsa in Disney’s blockbuster smash Frozen, would love for her animated, magically empowered princess to have a girlfriend in the upcoming sequel.
The Broadway vet, 44, addressed a campaign that aims to nab a female love interest or Elsa while attending the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 22.
“I think it’s great,” Menzel told Entertainment Tonight. “Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out.”
She added: “No matter what, [the character] changed my life.”
As previously reported, the campaign #GiveElsaAGirlfriend went viral earlier this month thanks to a teenage girl named Alexis Isabel Moncada. Moncada caught the attention of other Frozen fanatics when she tweeted on April 30: “I hope Disney makes Elsa a lesbian princess imagine how iconic that would be.” She added, “Dear @Disney, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend.”
Menzel starred alongside Kristen Bell (Elsa’s little sister Anna) in the 2013 movie, which has grossed more than $1.2 billion worldwide. Other stars featured include Josh Gad (Olaf), Jonathan Groff (Kristoff) and Santino Fontana (Hans).
In March 2015, it was announced that a sequel was in the works. “We enjoyed making Frozen Fever so much and being back in that world with those characters,” Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios John Lasseter said in a statement at the time. “Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and we’re taking you back to Arendelle. We are so excited about that.”
Frozen 2 is scheduled to hit theaters in 2018.
