Melanie “Mel B” Brown was born on May 29, 1975. She is most well-known as “Scary Spice” from the 90s girl group the Spice Girls. Today, she works as a songwriter, actress, author and television presenter.
Brown began her career in a band called Touch and quickly moved on to the Spice Girls. The group’s first single “Wannabe” garnered international popular acclaim and the album, Spice, went number one around the world. In 1997, the group starred in the comedy Spice World, which fictionalized the women’s success. To date, the Spice Girls have sold over 55 million records, had nine No. 1 singles and two No. 1 albums.
Since her Spice Girls days, Brown has released two solo albums, selling over half a million records. Brown’s movie repertoire includes Burn It, The Seat Filler and Fish. On stage, Brown has appeared in the musical Rent and The Vagina Monologues. In 2007, she joined the cast of Dancing With the Stars and placed second. She also took the place of Marissa Jaret Winokur as the host of Oxygen’s reality series Dance Your Ass Off in 2010.
Brown lives with her husband, movie producer Stephen Belafonte, and two daughters. She had Phoenix with ex-husband Jimmy Gulzar and Angel with ex-boyfriend Eddie Murphy. In September 2011, Brown and Belafonte welcomed their first child together.
