Los Angeles native Skrillex (born Sonny John Moore) began his industry career as the lead singer of the band From First to Last, and released two albums with the group before branching out on his own. Also a disc jockey and music producer who first released his own music for free on MySpace, dubstep’s Skrillex has six Grammy Awards to his name, including Best Dance/Electronica Album for 2012’s Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites and Best Dance Recording for 2013’s “Bangarang.”
No. 2 on Forbes‘ list of the World’s Highest-Paid DJs (as of 2013) with an estimated net worth of $15 million, Skrillex — whose stage name was created when he and pals were making up AOL Instant Messenger screen names in their teen years — was signed by Deadmau5’s record label Mau5trap after sending his own track to the DJ’s attention. He has performed under the moniker Skrillex since 2008.
Skrillex — who has dated Ellie Goulding — launched his own indie record label, OWSLA, in September 2011 with 12 artists already contracted, and counts fellow musicians Kanye West and Jared Leto among his celebrity fans.
