The Modern Family star, 28, shared photos from the event on Instagram on Tuesday, February 25, showing off the pink Zac Posen dress she wore to the star-studded soiree. “I’m wearing TWO pairs of spanx,” she captioned the post. “Why diet? When you can just hide it!”
Commenters then slammed Hyland for the post. “As a (thin) person with influence your caption is problematic,” one wrote. “You’re suggesting that women should EITHER diet or hide. How about NEITHER.”
“Most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard,” wrote another. “She doesn’t have an ounce of fat she’s just so annoying lol.”
Amid the backlash, Hyland retweeted one Twitter user’s words of advice: “If you’re trying to hide the bump from your transplant, forget it. I’ve been trying for years!! Stay healthy.”
In response, the Dirty Dancing actress said, “Someone gets it!!”
An hour later, Hyland also defended herself against a now-deleted tweet. “When you have two kidney transplants and are on steroids for life get back to me,” she wrote in response.
Hyland, who is dating Bachelor in Paradise star Wells Adams, has been open with fans about her kidney dysplasia diagnosis, disclosing in December 2018 that she had a second kidney transplant after her body rejected the first donor kidney.
The SAG Award winner also detailed her private battle in a sit-down with Ellen DeGeneres last month, revealing that she “was very, very, very close” to attempting suicide.
“After 26, 27 years of just always being sick and being in chronic pain every single day and you don’t know when you’re going to have the next good day, it’s really, really hard,” she explained. “I would write letters in my head to loved ones of why I did it and my reasoning behind it, how it was nobody’s fault. I didn’t want to write it down on paper because I didn’t want anybody to find it. That’s how serious I was.”
If you or someone you know is in emotional distress or considering suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
