Amal Clooney landed her first Vogue cover weeks before cohosting the Met Gala with Anna Wintour, Rihanna and Donatella Versace. The human rights lawyer, 40, appears in the magazine’s May 2018 issue in a stunning pink Alexander McQueen gown with makeup by Charlotte Tilbury.

Clooney opened up in her cover story about her career, husband George Clooney and their twins, Alexander and Ella. While discussing life as a new mother, Amal revealed her 10-month-old babies’ first words: “We’ve had some ‘Mamas’ and ‘Dadas.’ George was very careful to ensure that ‘Mama’ was the first word.”

The Oscar winner, 56, and the barrister tied the knot in Venice, Italy, in September 2014. They welcomed Alexander and Ella in June 2017.

The couple were first introduced by a mutual friend at George’s home in Lake Como, Italy. “Of course she was beautiful. But I also thought she was fascinating, and I thought she was brilliant,” the actor told Vogue. “Her life was incredibly exciting — the clients she was taking on and the superhuman work that she was doing. I was taken with her from the moment I saw her.”

They quickly became friends and stayed in touch via email before planning their first date at a restaurant in London.

“It felt like the most natural thing in the world,” Amal gushed. “Before that experience, I always hoped there could be love that was overwhelming and didn’t require any weighing or decision-making. It’s the one thing in life that I think is the biggest determinant of happiness, and it’s the thing you have the least control over. Are you going to meet this person? I was 35 when I met him. It wasn’t obvious that it was going to happen for me. And I wasn’t willing or excited about the idea of getting married or having a family in the absence of that.”

At the time, George (who was previously married to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993) also wasn’t sure whether marriage was in the cards. “If you know anything about my crazy life, you know that I’d pretty much committed to the idea of never marrying again,” he explained. “But I started dating Amal, and I immediately knew that something was very different.”

Since then, the spouses — who recently attended and donated $500,000 to the March for Our Lives demonstration in Washington, D.C. — have continued to work together on various humanitarian efforts, in addition to Amal’s work with human rights.

“She’s the professional, and I’m the amateur,” George told the magazine. “I get to see someone at the absolute top of their game doing their job better than anybody I’ve ever seen.”
