Old-school romance! Angelina Jolie revealed to Australia's TV Week magazine that she and fiance Brad Pitt exchanged handwritten love letters while working on their respective projects from opposite ends of the world.
"He was supporting from a distance," Jolie, 39, recalled of their long-distance relationship from when she was directing Unbroken in Australia, and Pitt, 50, was shooting Fury in London. "It was quite romantic in a way."
With both stars working on historical dramas, they decided to act as if they were entwined in their own love affair from another era.
"We decided to be of that time when we could imagine he was in the European theater and I was in the Pacific theater," she revealed. "We wrote handwritten letters to each other that were very connecting for us, thinking of the people that were separated for months if not years at a time back then."
Jolie, along with the couple's six kids, relocated to Australia in 2013 to shoot the film adaptation of Laura Hillenbrand's best-selling book, Unbroken. Her sophomore directorial venture was based on the true story of late Olympian and World War II POW Louis Zamperini, who passed away in early July at age 97.
The actress, who was close to Zamperini, also revealed to TV Week that she was able to show him a rough cut of the movie before he passed away. "I brought him the film on my laptop in the hospital," she said. "It was amazing seeing someone at the end of their life watching their life unfold again, at the same time their body was shutting down."
Jolie said that Louie "wanted me to make the movie to show something hopeful about the strength of the human spirit that can pull us through. He reminded me to have my surgery in the year that I did and he reminded me to appreciate every day of my life." (Jolie underwent a preventative double mastectomy in March 2013, which she revealed in a New York Times op-ed last May.)
The biopic hits theaters on Christmas Day.
